Fome! Esse é um termo extremamente usado em todas as línguas desse mundo para as mais variadas situações. Tão usado que quem tem fome de poder, fome de votos, fome de bola, fome de dinheiro ou, até mesmo, quem tem fome de notícias raramente tem a verdadeira fome: a fome de comida. A fome é uma triste realidade e a desnutrição é um dos mais complexos e sérios problemas da vida humana. Por quê? Simples, porque o mundo produz alimentos suficientes para todos, mas o desperdício, as barreiras comerciais, a defasagem cultural, a guerra, o desnível econômico, o desemprego, a falta de educação, a corrupção e a ganância de muitos acabam provocando a miséria de outros.
A verdade é que a fome é uma violação constitucional e pode ser mais do que uma ameaça ambiental. Pode ser também uma ameaça política. E aí é que está o perigo: a fome pode comprometer politicamente o terceiro pernambucano a tratar do assunto com profundidade e com repercussão mundial.

O primeiro pernambucano a debruçar-se sobre o tema foi Josué de Castro, aliás quem melhor denunciou as ameaças da fome à humanidade. Descreveu como ninguém as causas e as conseqüências dessa mazela no seu famoso livro “Geografia da Fome”, um clássico no assunto. Josué era médico, político e escritor. Por suas denúncias foi destinado a morrer no exílio, longe de sua terra natal, o Recife.
Coube a outro pernambucano, Nelson Chaves – médico e nutricionista – a estarrecer o mundo com sua tese de que estava surgindo uma sub-raça humana no Nordeste brasileiro provocada pela fome. Era o final dos anos sessenta. Chaves morreu no início dos anos oitenta dizendo que sabia que “estava carregando água em cestos” com suas denúncias, mas continuava fazendo-as, porque não se podia perder a esperança de acabar com a fome.

O fato é que a fome continua sendo um desafio maior. E o terceiro pernambucano, o presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, entrou na questão da fome para valer. Deu dimensão internacional ao problema, criou um ministério para combater o mal e jogou suas fichas políticas nesse prato extremamente indigesto. O presidente Lula sabe que todos aqueles que violam a constituição federal devem colocar as barbas de molho. E a Constituição do Brasil é clara: o artigo primeiro defende a dignidade humana; o artigo terceiro estabelece a construção de uma sociedade justa e solidária, bem como a erradicação da pobreza; e o artigo quinto, dos direitos fundamentais, assegura que ninguém pode ser submetido a tratamento desumano ou degradante.
Por isso, o Presidente – vindo de Garanhuns – anunciou aos quatro ventos que vai acabar com a fome. Sua promessa e a mobilização de seu Governo foram tão grandes e despertaram tantas expectativas que tiveram eco no Fórum Social Mundial de Porto Alegre, no Encontro de Davos e até nos campos de futebol da China. A boa intenção do Fome Zero não pode tropeçar em alguma circunstância estratégica, pontos de vaidade ou mesmo no desperdício burocrático que leve a comprometer o Programa. Comprometimento de ação significa comprometimento político.

Rogério Rocco, especialista em direito ambiental, dizia com toda autoridade: a fome não pode ser tipificada como crime, porém algumas condutas que a desencadeiam podem ser punidas como crime.
Assim, amigo leitor, além de torcer para que o programa do presidente Lula dê certo, é hora de ampliar nossos horizontes, de cada um dar sua participação e se conscientizar que, mais do que a fome de poder, de votos, de bola, de dinheiro e de notícias, chegou o momento de lembrar Cristo, em Mateus 5.6, e repetir: “Bem-aventurados os que têm fome e sede de Justiça, porque serão fartos”.
Que o Programa Fome Zero mobilize o Brasil, traga resultados concretos e também desencadeie dois outros programas fundamentais para esse novo tempo: in-Justiça Zero! E – urgente, urgentíssima – Impunidade Zero!SG

Hunger! This is an extremely used term in all languages of the world for the most diverse situations. So used that those who hunger for power, hunger for votes, hunger for money, hunger for fame, and even, who have hunger for information rarely have the true hunger: the hunger for food. Hunger is a sad reality and undernutrition is one of the most complex and serious problems in human life. Why? Simply because the world produces enough food for all, but wastefulness, trade barriers, cultural imbalance, war, economic unevenness, unemployment, lack of education, corruption and greed of many end up provoking misery for others. The truth is that hunger is a constitutional violation and can more than just an environmental threat. It can also be a political threat. And this is where the danger lies: hunger can politically compromise the third Pernambuco citizen to deal with the subject with depth and repercussion all over the world.

The first Pernambuco state citizen to investigate the subject was Josué de Castro, by the way, the one who best denounced the threats of hunger to humanity. He best described the causes and the consequences of this moral flaw in his famous book “The Geography of Hunger”, a classic within the theme. Josué was a doctor, a politician and a writer. By his formal accusations he was destined to die in exile, far from his native town, Recife, capital of Pernambuco state.
Another Pernambuco citizen, Nelson Chaves – a doctor and nutritionist – was responsible for scaring the world with his thesis which stated that a human sub-race was being born in Northeastern Brazil, as a result of hunger. It was in the end of the Sixties. Chaves died in the beginning of the Eighties saying that he was “trying to fill up a bottomless cup with water” with his accusations, but he continued making them, because one could not lose the hope of bringing hunger to an end.

The fact is that hunger is still a major challenge. And the third Pernambuco citizen, president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is dealing with the hunger issue for real. He gave an international dimension to the problem, developed a ministry to fight this evil and bet all his political chips on this extremely indigestive plate. President Lula knows that all those who violate the federal constitution must pay their time. And the Constitution of Brazil is clear: the first article defends human dignity; the third article establishes the construction of a fair and solidary society, as well as the eradication of poverty; and the fifth article, on fundamental rights, assures that no one can be forced to undergo inhuman or degrading treatment.
Therefore, the President – who was born in the town of Garanhuns, in Pernambuco state – announced loud and clear that he will put an end to hunger. His promise and the mobilization of his Government have been so great and have awakened so many expectations that they echoed in the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, in the Davos Conference and even in China’s soccer fields. The good intention of Zero Hunger cannot stumble in any strategic circumstance, vanity points or even in bureaucratic wastefulness that could compromise the Program.
Action commitment means political commitment.
Rogério Rocco, specialist in environmental law, said with certainty: hunger cannot be classified as a crime, however some behaviors that cause it can be punished as a crime.

Thus, reading friend, besides cheering for president Lula’s program to work, it is time to expand our horizons, for each one of us to take part and to acquire knowledge that, above the hunger for power, votes, money and information, the time has come to remember Christ, in Matthew Chapter 5 verse 6 (KJV), and to repeat: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”
May Zero Hunger Program mobilize Brazil, bring concrete results and also unchain two other basic programs for this new time: Zero Injustice! And – urgently, really urgently – Zero Impunity! SG – voltar ao topo
