Folha do Meio Ambiente

Não há sabedoria maior do que trocar vitórias imediatas pelas conquistas duradouras. A conscientização ambiental, a disposição de crianças e jovens em entender, participar e até cobrar dos mais velhos uma postura ecologicamente correta de preservação dos recursos naturais é mais do que um bom sinal. É uma conquista que promete ser duradoura.
Estas conquistas não mudam em nada a realidade socioambiental no mundo de hoje: a pobreza extrema afeta boa parte da humanidade, mais da metade de nossos rios estão poluídos, quase 20% dos solos estão degradados, 50% da população da Terra sofrem com a escassez de água, muitos animais e muitas plantas caminham para a extinção e o clima…  bem, o clima repercute as terríveis mudanças que o homem faz nos ecossistemas. Quem quiser antever a catástrofe final é bom assistir ao filme O Dia Depois de Amanhã que mostra, numa ficção científica, que as forças desencadeadas por toda Terra não são fruto da fúria de Deus, mas diretamente vinculadas aos crescentes níveis de poluição atmosférica. O ar, a água, os recursos animais e minerais, enfim, a própria Terra são presentes que recebemos de graça. A ciência e a educação podem ajudar a preservá-los, mas temos que nos convencer de uma verdade definitiva: a mais avançada tecnologia não será capaz de repô-los. Junho é o mês do meio ambiente, portanto propício para estas reflexões. Aliás, o 5 de junho foi escolhido pela ONU para ser o Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente justamente com este objetivo.
Há 32 anos, em junho de 1972, realizou-se em Estocolmo a primeira Conferência Mundial de Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente, promovida pela ONU, com a participação de 76 países. No dia 5 de junho foi assinada a Carta dos Deveres Ambientais, uma agenda global de mudanças. Objetivo: propor estratégias ambientais de longo prazo para obter um desenvolvimento sustentado.
A importância desta primeira reunião para tratar efetivamente sobre a questão ambiental foi tão importante que a ONU reservou a data para celebrar o Dia Mundial do Meio Ambiente. É mais um tempo para reflexão e para se conscientizar que o desenvolvimento sem levar em conta o meio ambiente é estéril.
As comemorações durante a semana e o mês devem perdurar por todo o ano, pois são oportunidades para espalhar essa verdade: não há nenhuma causa mais inteligente, nenhuma tarefa mais apropriada do que proteger o futuro de nossa espécie e de nosso Planeta. A verdade é que quase todos os problemas são provocados por nós mesmos, mas também podem ser solucionados por nós mesmos. Para aprender, para ensinar e para propagar esta lição, o mundo precisa, urgente, de bons zeladores. E precisa tanto de bons zeladores globais como de bons zeladores para o mundinho bem à nossa volta: para nossa cidade, para nosso bairro, para nossa rua e para nossas próprias atividades.
Também em junho a Folha do Meio Ambiente comemora 15 anos de vida. A primeira edição saiu em junho de 1989 e, desde então, sem fugir aos seus princípios éticos e estéticos, a FMA vem fazendo como os rios que só atingem o mar porque, a cada momento, têm paciência e humildade para buscar a melhor forma de contornar os obstáculos. Ainda não atingimos o mar, mas os obstáculos que temos enfrentado mostram que, como os rios, um dia também chegaremos lá.

There is no greater wisdom that trading immediate victories for long lasting conquests.  Environmental awareness, the willingness of children and young people to understand, participate and even demand from their elders an ecologically correct stance toward preserving our natural resources is much more than just a good sign.  It is a conquest that promises to be long lasting.
These conquests however, do not change one iota the social and environmental reality of the world today:  extreme poverty affects a large part of humanity, greater than fifty percent of our rivers are polluted, nearly twenty percent of the soil is depleted, fifty percent of the world's population suffers from water shortages and a large number of plants and animals are on the path toward extinction, not to mention the climate, which… well, suffice it to say that the climate is the result of the terrible changes that man has made in our ecosystems.   Anyone wanting a preview of the final catastrophe should watch the movie, The Day After Tomorrow, which depicts, in a science fiction genre, that the forces unleashed throughout the world are not the fruit of the wrath of God, but are directly linked to the growing levels of air borne pollution.  (Page 30)
The air, water, animal and mineral resources, or better, the world itself are gifts we have received free of charge.  Science and education can help preserve them, but we must resign ourselves to one irrefutable truth:  the most advanced technology is unable to replace them.  June is environment month, and should serve as a time of reflection on these facts.  After all, June 5 was chosen by the United Nations to be the International Environment Day, specifically for this purpose. 
Thirty-two years ago in June 1972, the first World Conference on Development and Environment was held in Stockholm, under the aegis of the United Nations and the participation of 76 countries.  On June 5, the Environmental Duties Agreement was signed, which was an agenda calling for global changes.  The purpose of this letter was to propose long-term environmental strategies to achieve sustained development.  The importance of this first meeting to endeavor to effectively deal with environmental issues was so important that the UN set this date aside to celebrate the International Environment Day.  It is one more time for reflection and awareness that development which disregards the environment is sterile.  Commemorations during the week and month should continue throughout the year; they are opportunities to spread this truth:  there is no more intelligent cause, or more appropriate duty than protecting the future of our species and our planet.  The truth is that we have created nearly all of our problems ourselves, but we can also solve them.  In order to learn about, teach and pass this lesson on, the world must urgently become good watchdogs.  We need not only good global watchdogs, but watchdogs for the smaller world surrounding us:  for the small towns, our neighborhood, our street and our own activities.
Also in June, the Folha do Meio Ambiente is also celebrating its 15th birthday.  The first edition came out in June 1989, and since then it has not deviated from its ethical or esthetic principles. The Folha do Meio Ambiente, can be compared to the rivers which flow to the sea, in that it has the patience and humility to at all times seek the best way to overcome obstacles.  We have not yet reached the ocean, but the obstacles we face have shown us, just as the rivers, that one day we will get there.
